Renewing PR Card – Residency Obligation

Hello World! With the lifting of the COVID-19 travel restrictions, more and more people are traveling outside of Canada these days. With that, some of you may be concerned that you may not meet the residency requirements for a PR card (Permanent Resident Card).

So today we would like to provide information on the residency requirement to maintain your PR card.

What is a Permanent Resident Card?

Residency Obligation

To keep your permanent resident status, you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years in one of the following situations. These 730 days don’t need to be continuous. Some of your time abroad may count towards the 730 days.

  • You are physically present in Canada.
  • You work full-time outside of Canada for:
    • a Canadian business or organization, or
    • the Canadian federal, provincial or territorial government
  • You are outside Canada with a spouse or common-law partner who is:
    • a Canadian citizen, or
    • a permanent resident outside Canada who is working full-time for a Canadian company or government
  • A dependent child living outside Canada with a parent who is:
    • a Canadian citizen, or
    • a permanent resident outside Canada who is working full-time for a Canadian company or government

Even if your PR card has expired, you can renew your PR card if you have been in Canada for 730 days out of the last five years.

Lost or Expired PR Card Outside Canada

If you lost your PR card outside of Canada, or if your PR card expired before you re-entered Canada, you need to apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD).

A PRTD is normally only valid for one single entry. You should apply for a new PR card as soon as you resume residence in Canada.
