Testimonials by A.N. – Renewing PR Card

Hello World! Time flies and we are already in September.

Today we would like to introduce a testimonial from our client, who applied for the Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) application.

“ I tried to prepare everything on my own at first, but I could not do it. I had a plan to go back to my home country and come back to Canada in August. So I needed to get this done process as soon as possible.  I asked Satoko to process on an urgent basis.  She was able to prepare all the required documents within a short time.  In the end, I was able to receive a new PR card by mail a lot faster than I expected.  Thank you very much for your prompt assistance! By A.N.”

I know many people renew their PR cards on their own.  However, it is very important to prepare all the documents without any missing information or errors.  Otherwise, the package will be returned to you.

We have a review-only service, which provides a thorough review of your documents and information making sure everything is in line with the requirements. If you are not confident in preparing documents, you can rely on our full-service support.

Permanent Resident Card (PR Card)

Once you become a Permanent Resident, you will receive the first PR card by mail. The PR Card is the official proof of your status as a permanent resident in Canada. You need the card if you plan on returning to Canada by any commercial transporter, such as a plane, train, boat, or bus.

To be eligible for a PR Card, you must:

  • be a permanent resident of Canada;
  • be physically present in Canada;
  • have been in Canada for at least 730 days in the past 5 years (period of stay outside the country may be counted under certain circumstances);
  • not be under an effective removal order;
  • not be a Canadian citizen; and
  • not be convicted of an offence related to the misuse of a PR Card

Process of Renewing PR Card

Applications for a PR card are reviewed at the Visa Office in Sydney, Nova Scotia. If it is clear that the applicant meets the residency requirement (being in Canada for at least 730 days in 5 years), the documents will be reviewed at the Visa Office in Sydney and a 5-year PR card will be issued. Incomplete documents (fees paid; photos submitted; forms signed) will not be reviewed and returned to the applicant.

If there is a problem with the information provided in the documentation and it is determined that the applicant may not meet the requirements, additional documentation will be requested. The applicant must provide the requested documentation within 30 days. If it’s sufficient, a 5-year PR card will be issued.

If the Officer determines that the residency requirement is not met or that the reason for not meeting the residency requirement is insufficient humanitarian and compassionate (H&C), the application documents are forwarded to the local visa office for the applicant to pick up the new PR Card in person. Applicants must be notified by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) office and visit the visa office on the date and time specified. The applicants may be interviewed regarding the application and residency.

Following the interview, if the officer is satisfied that the residency obligation is met or H&C consideration is granted, the 5-year PR card will be issued. If it is determined that the residency obligation is not met or H&C consideration is not granted, the PR card will not be renewed. The applicant will be issued a PR card for 1-year, guaranteeing a period of filing an appeal.
