First ITA Issued to Trade Occupations
Hello World! Today we would like to share an update on the new category-based selection for Express Entry.
What is category-based selection?
On August 1, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the launch of the targeted draw for candidates with experience in trades professions, under Express Entry category-based selection, and held the first drawing on August 3, 2023.
Results: Rounds of Invitations
For the first time since the launch of the new category system for Express Entry was announced, an Invitation to Apply (ITA) was issued to a trade occupation. The result is as follow.

Category-Based Selection – Trade Occupations
This category focus on candidates with trades expertise – including carpentry, plumbing, and welding with the purpose of securing the skilled workers that Canada’s construction sector needs across the country.
To be eligible, you must have accumulated, within the past 3 years, at least 6 months of continuous work experience (in Canada or abroad) in an occupation listed below.
- Residential and commercial installers and servicers
- Elevator constructors and mechanics
- Machine fitters
- Heating, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics
- Construction millwrights and industrial mechanics
- Carpenters
- Plumbers
- Electricians (except industrial and power system)
- Welders and related machine operators
- Contractors and supervisors, other construction trades, installers, repairers and servicers

As noted above, the first category-based selection was held for trade occupations.
There are more category-based draws planned for transport occupations and agriculture / agri-food occupations, so we will keep an eye on this new selection system and will provide new information as soon as it is announced.
