Good News for Family Class Applicants
Hello World! Today we would like to share a new measure for the Family Sponsorship Program.
The applicants under Family Sponsorship Program are now eligible to apply for an Open Work Permit (OWP) with their application for permanent residence, regardless of whether it is inside or outside – Canada applications.
What is Family Sponsorship Program?
The Family Sponsorship Program allows adult Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor family members who wish to immigrate to Canada and apply for permanent residence.

New Measures for Family Sponsorship Program
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the following new measures to strengthen and improve family reunification.
- Faster Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) processing times for accompanying family members: Most of these applications are processed within 30 days to allow families to be together sooner while they wait for their permanent residence to be finalized.
- OWP is available for both inside and outside – Canada applications: OWPs are available for spousal applicants and their dependent children who reside with their sponsor in Canada and have temporary resident status.
- OWP extensions: The OWP extension for an additional 18 months is available for OWP holders expiring between August 1st and the end of 2023.

The OWPs were previously only allowed for the application made inside Canada for Family Sponsorship Program. It is now extended to those who are applying from outside Canada.
