Targeted Express Entry
Hello World! Today, we would like to share information on a new selection system for the Express Entry expected to be launched this spring.
(Please check our previous article for information about the normal Express Entry.)
In line with the existing Express Entry system, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) plans to introduce a new Express Entry system targeted to specific categories.
What is Targeted Express Entry?
The new Express Entry will target specific categories to help address Canada’s labour force shortages and promote economic growth in French-speaking regions.
Current Express Entry Draws:
Eligible candidates are given a score out of 1200 points using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Those with the highest scores are most likely to receive an invitation to apply (ITA).
Targeted Express Entry Draws:
Selecting candidates based on high-demand occupations and key attributes (e.g., French language skills) to help meet a specific economic priority.
The targeted Express Entry draws will consist of a portion of overall ITAs and invitations based on the CRS scores will remain.
Possible Targeted Categories
Although no exact details have been released at this time, IRCC is considering the following four target groups, with a focus on addressing Canada’s labour shortage and economic growth in French-speaking minority areas. Categories for category-based selection will be determined by further consultations.
1. Specific Occupations and Sectors
Specific occupations and sectors having chronic labour shortages. Between 2019 and 2021, the most popular primary occupations invited to apply through Express Entry are listed below:
- food service supervisors
- administrative assistants
- financial auditors and accountants
- retail sales supervisors
- software engineers and designers
- professional occupations in advertising, marketing and public relations
- cooks
- computer programmers and interactive media developers
- information systems analysts and consultants
- user support technicians
- restaurant and food service managers
- administrative officers
2. International Student Graduates
IRCC finds that graduates with a degree or diploma from a designated institution have the potential to cover Canada’s current and future workforce shortages.
3. Temporary Foreign Workers
It is considered skilled temporary foreign workers could improve responsiveness to chronic economic needs. Foreign workers with the necessary skills are easily matched with the qualifications that companies are looking for.
4. French-Speaker
As one of the goals of the Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025 announced last November, IRCC intends to increase the number of French speakers to promote economic growth in French-speaking regions.
