【Apr 2022】Update on Travel Restrictions

Hello World! Today we would like to share updates on travel restrictions announced by the Government of Canada on March 17, 2022. Please also check our previous article on travel restrictions from here.

Effective April 1, fully vaccinated travellers no longer need to provide a pre-entry COVID-19 test result to enter Canada.

No Longer Need Pre-Entry COVID-19 Tests

The Government of Canada announced that effective April 1, 2022, fully vaccinated travellers are no longer needed to provide a pre-entry COVID-19 test result to enter Canada by air, land or water.

Random inspections upon arrival continue.

Travellers arriving in Canada from any country, who qualify as fully vaccinated, may need to take a COVID-19 test on arrival if selected for mandatory random testing. Travellers selected do not need to quarantine while awaiting their test results.

For Unvaccinated Travellers

For partially or unvaccinated travellers who are currently allowed to travel to Canada, pre-entry testing requirements remain unchanged. Unless otherwise exempt, all travellers 5 years of age or older who do not qualify as fully vaccinated still need to provide one of the following proofs of pre-entry COVID-19 test result:

  • *Negative Antigen Test: taken outside of Canada no more than one day before their scheduled flight departure time or their arrival at the land border or marine port of entry; or
  • Negative Molecular Test: taken no more than 72 hours before their scheduled flight departure time or their arrival at the land border or marine port of entry; or
  • Previous Positive Molecular Test: taken at least 10 calendar days and no more than 180 calendar days before their scheduled flight departure time or their arrival at the land border or marine port of entry. It is important to note that positive antigen test results will not be accepted.

*Note: Taking an antigen test at home is not sufficient. It must be administered or observed by an accredited lab or testing provider.

All Travellers

All travellers continue to be required to submit their mandatory information in ArriveCAN before they arrive in Canada.

Travellers who arrive without completing their ArriveCAN submission may have to test on arrival and quarantine for 14 days, regardless of their vaccination status.

Travellers taking a cruise or a plane must submit their information in ArriveCAN within 72 hours before boarding.

As mentioned above, the requirement to provide a pre-entry COVID-19 test result is no longer necessary if the travellers are fully vaccinated. This may have eased the burden for those who are considering travelling to Canada.

However, the Government of Canada may change the rules and conditions to enter Canada without notice based on the domestic COVID-19 situation.
