Immigration News: Jan-Feb 2025
Hello, World! Today, we would like to share two recent immigration updates that we think you will find interesting.
BC PNP Allocation 50% Reduction in 2025
The Government of Canada has announced the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) allocation for 2025 has been reduced by 50%, from 8,000 to 4,000 nominations.
This reduction is expected to have a significant impact on BC PNP operations, as the nomination quota allocated to BC has been significantly reduced, processing times are expected to be longer throughout this year.

Strengthening of Border Security
The Canadian government introduced stricter new regulations effective January 31, 2025, which strengthened the authority to cancel temporary resident documents.
As a result, immigration and border services officers now have the authority to cancel Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs), Electronic Travel Authorizations (eTAs), Work Permits, and Study Permits under specific conditions. These conditions include the following:
- If there is a change in a person’s status or situation that makes them inadmissible or no longer qualified to hold the document (for example, the person provided false information or has a criminal record).
- An officer is not satisfied that the individual will leave Canada before the end of their authorized stay.
- The passport or other travel document in respect of which the temporary resident visa was issued is lost, stolen, or destroyed.
- When a temporary resident obtains a Canadian permanent resident.
- When a temporary resident is deceased.
- The document was issued based on an administrative error.
These changes are expected to strengthen the integrity of temporary residence programs and enhance security at the border and within Canada.

The reduction in the BC PNP allocation for 2025 is expected to have a significant impact on applicants. Due to the limited number of available slots, applicants will need to be more strategic and planned in their immigration process.
In addition, more temporary resident applications may be refused or cancelled even after your documents are approved, making it even more important to carefully prepare their applications and comply with relevant regulations.
