Express Entry – Remove Points for Job Offers

Hello World! Today, we would like to share some important information regarding the upcoming change to the Express Entry point system.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have announced that starting in Spring 2025, candidates in the Express Entry pool will no longer receive additional points for having a job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

For those working with an LMIA-based Work Permit and aiming for permanent residency, this change is a significant update, so be sure to read on.

What is LMIA?

LMIA is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker. A positive LMIA will show that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job. It will also show that no Canadian worker or permanent resident is available to do the job.

Once a positive LMIA is issued, the employer is allowed to hire the foreign worker, and the worker can receive additional points in the Express Entry point system.

Express Entry & Additional Points by LMIA

Express Entry is a points-based immigration management system for key economic immigration programs, designed to prioritize applicants who wish to obtain permanent residency in Canada based on their ability to contribute to the country’s economy.

Once a positive LMIA is issued, applicants are eligible to receive additional points for a job offer supported by LMIA under Express Entry. However, the IRCC has decided to review to remove the LMIA points starting in the spring of 2025.

What is the Reason for this Change?

Offering additional Express Entry points for job offers supported by an LMIA created an incentive for individuals to illegally buy or sell LMIAs to enhance their chances of being selected for permanent residency.

The IRCC aims to reduce such fraud and ensure fairness and transparency in the immigration process by removing points for job offers.

Who will be Affected?

Once the change is introduced, it will apply to existing candidates with LMIA-based job offers, workers seeking permanent residence while working under an LMIA-based Work Permit, and new candidates entering the Express Entry pool.

This change does not affect the following individuals:

  • who have already received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) by the effective date or
  • who have already submitted a Permanent Residence (PR) application to IRCC by the effective date.
