New Category System for Express Entry

On May 31, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the launch of category-based selection criteria for Express Entry.
What is category-based selection?
The new Express Entry targets specific categories set by the government to meet Canadian labour market needs and economic goals.
Candidates in specific categories will be selected based on the following criteria.
- Ability to communicate in an official language
- Work experience
- Education
Selected categories for 2023
Eligible categories are selected based on labour market information and predictions as well as information received from provinces and territories, and stakeholders across the country.
For this year, the following categories were selected.
● French-language proficiency category:
Must have French-language test results that show a minimum score of 7 in all 4 language abilities on the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC).
● Occupations category:
Must have accumulated, within the past 3 years, at least 6 months of continuous work experience (in Canada or abroad) in an occupation listed below.
- Healthcare occupations
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
- Trade occupations
- Transport occupations
- Agriculture and agri-food occupations
