【Extends Online Study Period】PGWP
Hello World! Today we would like to share information about the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).
The PGWP is a great Work Permit for international students looking to work or immigrate to Canada in the future. Please be sure to read it!
Online Study is Eligible for PGWP until Aug 2022
Online study is not normally eligible for a PGWP application. It has allowed international students to count time spent studying online from outside Canada toward the length of a PGWP since the COVID-19 pandemic.
This rule was originally set to end on December 31, 2021. The Canadian government has recently extended this rule to August 31, 2022.
By means of this, all of the time you spent studying online from outside Canada between spring 2020 and August 31, 2022, counts toward the length of a PGWP.
You cannot count the following time toward the length of a PGWP:
- Time spent studying outside Canada after August 31, 2022.
- Time spent studying before you applied for a Study Permit.

What is Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?
The PGWP is an open Work Permit. The international students who have completed a course more than 8 months and earned a degree, diploma or certificate from a designated learning institution (DLI) are eligible for the Work Permit.
You have up to 180 days to apply for a PGWP after you get your
- degree or diploma
- transcript or
- official letter from your school
To be eligible, your study permit must have been valid at some point during these 180 days.
