In our last article, we shared the information on travel restrictions for Omicron.
Today we would like to provide some updates on the travel restrictions. If you plan to travel to Canada, please check the following carefully.
All Travellers Need COVID-19 Test Before Arrival
The Government of Canada announced further adjustments to travel and border measures.
As of December 21, 2021, unless specifically exempted, all travellers must take a pre-entry COVID-19 test before arriving in Canada, regardless of how long they were away.
As a result, the COVID-19 testing exemption for short-trip within 72 hours has been lifted. (Please check our previous article from here.)
- The COVID-19 testing done in Canada is no longer be accepted. The pre-entry test must be performed in a country other than Canada within 72 hours of arrival at the land border or within 72 hours of a scheduled flight departure.
- Travellers must either have a negative pre-entry COVID-19 test result taken no more than 72 hours before arriving in Canada or a previous positive test result taken between 14 and 180 days before departure to Canada.
- Antigen tests, often called “rapid tests” are not accepted.
COVID-19 Test Exemption for B.C. Residents
Fully vaccinated B.C. residents have been given an exemption from taking a pre-entry COVID-19 test before coming back to Canada.
This refers to residents:
- who must travel to the U.S. by land to access or purchase goods or services, and
- who are absent from Canada for no more than 24 hours.
This exemption extends to accompanying unvaccinated children under 12 years of age.
Those attending social visits, events or functions are not exempt from the pre-arrival testing rule.
