Additional Travel Restrictions for Omicron
Hello World! The end of the year is just around the corner. Today we would like to share additional travel restrictions announced by the Government of Canada to prevent further spread of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron.
Please refer to the past article of travel restrictions from here.
1. Arrival COVID-19 Test is Now Required
On November 30, 2021, the Government of Canada announced additional entry requirements. Incoming air travellers from all countries except the United States are now required to take COVID-19 tests when arriving in Canada.
The requirement also applies to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. They are required to quarantine while they await the results of their arrival test.
Unvaccinated Travellers:
Unvaccinated travellers authorized to Canada (Please check the related article from here.) are continued to be tested on arrival and Day 8 and are required to quarantine for 14 days. Further, unvaccinated travellers arriving by air are now required to stay in a designated quarantine facility or other suitable location while they await the result of their on arrival COVID-19 test.
2. Canada Bans Entry from More Countries
The Government of Canada added Egypt, Nigeria and Malawi to the travel ban list over concerns of the spread of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron.
Foreign visitors who have travelled to the following 10 countries over the last 14 days are not authorized to enter Canada.
- Botswana
- Egypt
- Eswatini
- Lesotho
- Malawi
- Mozambique
- Namibia
- Nigeria
- South Africa
- Zimbabwe
Canadian citizens and permanent residents, regardless of their vaccination status, who have been in any of these 10 countries in the past 14 days, are subject to enhanced pre-entry and arrival COVID-19 testing, screening, and quarantine measures.
Please refer to the following Government’s website for more information.
3. New COVID-19 Testing Rules for U.S. Entry
The government of the United States announced that Canadians and all other foreign visitors who travel to the United States by air now need to get a COVID-19 test no later than the day before their departure.
Previously, fully vaccinated travellers were required to show proof of a negative test taken within 72 hours of departure. The change intends to limit the spread of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron.
According to the Global NEWS report, there was no announcement on land borders or whether fully vaccinated Canadians who drive to across borders would be required to show a test result. Currently, no such test is needed to cross into the United States by land.
Please refer to our previouse article regarding U.S. – Canada border measures.
