Express Entry: ITA period back to 60 days

According to the recent Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC)’s news release, IRCC once again gives Express Entry candidates who receive an invitation to apply (ITA) 60 days to submit their application for permanent residence.

Candidates who received an ITA before June 29, 2021, still have 90 days to submit their application for permanent residence.

What is Express Entry

Express Entry is a points based immigration management system for key economic immigration programs, including;

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Canadian Experience Class
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • a portion of the Provincial Nominee Program

Candidates who choose to obtain permanent residence through Express Entry must complete a detailed profile online.

Invitation to Apply (ITA) :

After registering a profile, eligible candidates will automatically receive a score out of 1,200 points based on their profile and will be ranked against the other candidates in the pool. The higher a candidate’s points, the greater chance of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA). It is required to have an ITA to apply for permanent residence.

After having received an ITA on or after June 29, 2021, candidates have 60 days to submit their application for permanent residence.

The reason behind the changes to the ITA period

As per the below extract, at the start of COVID-19 pandemic, the ITA period was temporarily increased to 90 days from standard 60 days. It was meant to allow applicants to have more time to prepare their documents.

IRCC says Canada continues to welcome more newcomers. The return to the 60-days timeframe will allow the department to process higher volumes of applications.

“At the start of the pandemic, the invitation to apply period for permanent residence was increased from 60 to 90 days to provide clients with additional time to prepare their applications, in response to challenges they faced in acquiring the necessary documentation.

As Canada continues to welcome more newcomers, as outlined in the multi-year immigration levels plan, returning to the 60-day timeframe will support IRCC in processing higher volumes of applications in an expedited fashion. Facilitation measures for clients who are unable to provide complete applications due to the effects of the pandemic remain in place.”
