Hello World! Today, we would like to provide you with information on possible future changes to the Post-Graduation Work Permit<\/strong><\/a> (“PGWP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is currently working on eight possible changes that are considered for the PGWP program for international students.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 Potential Changes to PGWP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

IRCC is considering the following eight new measures for the PGWP program. These updates are intended to improve the international student program to better meet the needs of the Canadian labour market.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Eligibility Based on Occupations in Demand<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IRCC is considering making PGWP eligibility based on occupations that are in high demand and making it a requirement for applicants to complete study programs that are aligned with these occupations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.\u00a0New Language Requirement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is proposed to introduce a new language requirement for PGWP eligibility with proof of language proficiency above a certain level in English or French to qualify. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Job Offer Requirement for Extended PGWP<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

International students may need to obtain a job offer in an occupation that is in demand to extend the PGWP beyond one year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.\u00a0Additional Eligibility Requirement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further language proficiency tests or provincial approval may be introduced as additional requirements for extending a PGWP beyond the initial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Impact on Existing Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new rule might affect international students already enrolled. This means that all students, regardless of when they began their studies, would need to meet the new eligibility criteria. IRCC will continue to consider whether to exempt existing international students based on hearing from educational institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.\u00a0Revision of Occupations List<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The list of in-demand occupations should be reviewed regularly to reflect the changing needs of the Canadian labour market. IRCC seeks to determine the appropriate frequency of revisions and the timing of the implementation for currently enrolled international students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Consistency with Provincial Needs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new PGWP eligibility requirements may be aligned with the needs of each province. This means that international students studying in provinces with specific labour market needs will be more likely to find employment and stay long-term in these provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8.\u00a0Pathway to Permanent Residency in Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This change is also expected to align PGWP eligibility with the pathway to permanent residency. This may allow international students who find work in certain fields to transition to permanent residency more easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As noted above, IRCC is currently considering significant changes to the PGWP. If the proposed changes are implemented, existing international students will also be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
